FISHERS – Host Hamilton Southeastern spoiled Brownsburg’s fast start to the Hoosier Crossroads Conference season Sept. 4 as the Class 5A No. 21 host Royals used some first-half fireworks – and five touchdowns from running back Matt Ripp – in rolling to a 41-20 win.
Ripp carried 18 times for 160 yards and four TDs on the ground, and he added a fifth score on a 67-yard pass from quarterback Jake Jones (4 of 8 for 128 yards) … all after Brownsburg jumped out to a shocking 13-0 lead.
The Bulldogs got off to that torrid start with a 31-yard TD pass from Robby Robbins to Logan Williams and a 66-yard TD run by Darryl Jordan. But before the first quarter had ended, Brownsburg found itself trailing as Ripp ripped off a 34-yard scoring run of his own before reaching the house on the long scoring strike from Jones.
HSE (2-1 overall and in HCC play) then turned up the heat in the second quarter and took control of the game for good on Jones’ 34-yard TD pass to Gary Harris. Shortly thereafter, Ripp rolled in from 15 yards out to make it 27-13 when Eric Malm’s fourth extra-point kick try was blocked.
The Bulldogs (2-1, 2-1) came back on a nine-play drive to quiet down the Royal Crazies, with senior Gus Ervin scoring from two yards out to make the score 27-20. But the Royals took advantage of a rumbling, bumbling, arcade-like run from senior Michael Dorman on a 45-yard scamper to the Brownsburg 6. As Dorman ricocheted off several would-be defenders, the Bulldogs committed a personal foul on a face mask call.
That set the Royals up at the 3, and Ripp would score another TD from two yards out to give HSE a 34-20 lead heading to halftime.
Time for everyone to catch their breath!

The second half was a relative snoozefest compared with the opening 24 minutes. That is, until HSE senior Michael Petruzzi blitzed off the edge and forced Robbins to fumble, the ball recovered at the Brownsburg 25 by junior Steven Cremer.
Two plays later, Ripp broke through the left side of the Brownsburg defense and rolled into the end zone, Malm’s kick making for the final score of 41-20.

Next up for Hamilton Southeastern is a Sept. 11 date at 5A No. 10 Zionsville (2-0, heading into Saturday’s clash at Lucas Oil Stadium against 0-2 Noblesville. Brownsburg next will host Westfield (2-1), the other 2-0 HCC team to fall on Friday of Week 3, next Friday.
